PTSD Counseling for Women

Supportive PTSD counseling for women in Hickory, NC, and surrounding communities who are experiencing ongoing reactions to traumatic or overwhelming experiences.

After a traumatic experience, your brain and nervous system may continue responding as though danger is still present. You may feel constantly alert, experience unwanted memories, avoid reminders of what happened, or have strong emotional and physical reactions that seem difficult to control.

These responses can affect relationships, work, sleep, concentration, decision-making, and your ability to feel fully present.

If trauma-related symptoms are interfering with your life, I can help you understand what your brain and nervous system may be doing and develop skills for responding differently. I am based in Hickory, North Carolina, and serve women in Hickory, Conover, Newton, Morganton, Statesville, Charlotte, and Lenoir.

The Brain and Nervous System

Understanding PTSD

PTSD can develop when the brain and nervous system continue reacting to a traumatic experience after the immediate danger has passed.

You may feel constantly alert, easily startled, emotionally overwhelmed, or disconnected. Memories may return unexpectedly, or you may organize parts of your life around avoiding reminders of what happened.

These patterns are not simply a matter of choosing to “move on.” They can reflect ways your nervous system learned to protect you.

Counseling can help you understand these responses and begin strengthening your ability to recognize when you are safe in the present.

Space to Understand and Respond

How Counseling Can Help With PTSD

Depending on your needs, counseling may provide:

  • Education about trauma and nervous system responses
  • Support recognizing triggers
  • Grounding and present-moment skills
  • Help responding to unwanted memories
  • Support reducing patterns of avoidance
  • Space to process traumatic experiences when appropriate
  • Strategies for managing strong emotional reactions
  • Support rebuilding trust in yourself and your surroundings

We can work at a pace that feels manageable rather than forcing you into difficult material before you are ready.

Recognizing Your Experience

This Support May Be Helpful If…

  • You frequently feel on guard.
  • You avoid reminders of a traumatic experience.
  • Memories or emotions appear unexpectedly.
  • Your body reacts strongly to situations that remind you of what happened.
  • You have difficulty relaxing or feeling safe.
  • You feel emotionally detached or numb.
  • You have trouble trusting other people.
  • Trauma-related thoughts interfere with sleep or concentration.
  • You feel pulled into the past even when you know you are safe now.
  • You want practical support for managing these reactions.

Working Together

My Approach to PTSD Counseling

My approach begins with understanding the brain and nervous system. Trauma can create conditioned patterns that continue firing even when the original danger is no longer present.

One goal of our work may be helping your nervous system become better able to distinguish between past danger and present safety.

I have training in EMDR and incorporate trauma-focused work when appropriate. We may also use grounding, present-moment awareness, meditation, and other practices that help you strengthen your ability to return attention to the here and now.

Compassionate

Your reactions make sense in the context of what you have experienced. Therapy is a place to explore them without judgment.

Personalized

PTSD does not look identical for everyone. Our work will reflect your particular experiences and needs.

Supportive

I want counseling to feel safe, understandable, and collaborative rather than clinical or intimidating.
